Save the Olive Ridley Turtles - SSTCN

OLIVE RIDLEY TURTLES

An NGO CALLED The Students Sea Turtle Conservation Network [SSTCN] is a voluntary group, mainly comprising students who have been working in the beaches of Chennai since 1987, trying to conserve and create awareness about the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtle . The Olive Ridley turtles nest on the beaches at night, between December and April every year. When the turtle hatchlings emerge 45 days later, they release them safely into the sea. On Friday nights and Saturday nights they conduct a walk for interested people.

We walk seven kilometres from Neelangarai to Besant Nagar beach. We gather at Neelangarai beach at around 11pm. There is a discussion about turtles and other environmental issues and the walk starts after that. The walk may go on till 4am or 5am depending on whether we find any nests, and how many we find.
To get to Neelangarai beach you have to take the turning off ECR next to Shanthi hospital. There is an arch over the road that says Kapaleeswarar Nagar. You will need to leave your vehicles [if any] at the Elliots beach end to return home after the walk.

In order to join them on the turtle walks, you can contact any of the following people:-

The Voluntary Health Services (VHS), a registered non-profit society, was founded in July 1958, in Chennai (Madras), India, by the late Dr. K.S. Sanjivi, a renowned physician, a respected teacher and a visionary. Its basic concepts are the prevention and cure of serious illnesses, and the fostering of the family as a unit for medical care, with a family insurance scheme that is income-based. Among VHS's other objectives are community participation in its endeavours, medical education and medical research, and fieldwork in the organisation of medical care and health education

VHS also offers specific options for donations:

1.Rs. 35,000 will pay for a single room with a bed. The donor's name will be on a plaque outside the room.

2.Treatment for all poor in-patients for one day in a year. The interest from a one-time endowment of Rs. 1.5 lakh can be used for this, while Rs. 9000 will take care of the drugs and disposables used in treating them (about 70 on an average, at Rs. 125 per patient) on any specific day.

3.Maintaining an in-patient costs the hospital Rs. 420 a day (medicines, nursing, food, overheads, etc.).
70 patients cost around Rs. 30,000. The one-time endowment for this will be Rs. 5 lakh.

4.Feeding the poor patients on a day in the year specified by you, paid for with the interest from a corpus fund for that purpose. A donation of Rs. 5000 (which will be added to the corpus) will entitle the donor to choose the specific day he/she wishes to feed the poor patients.
Most people use this method to remember death anniversaries. A special feeding for all the patients on a particular day will be Rs. 2500.
The donor's name, and the name of the person in whose honour these donations have been made, will go up on the notice board on that day.

You can also give money for equipment any other specific purpose.
