Read a Book online

Read a free children's book online today and help share books with young people across Asia. For every book you read between now and January, 2012 in support of The Asia Foundation's Books for Asia program, We Give Books will donate one book to help this nonprofit send books to children in 18 countries that do not have access to high-quality reading material.
From mobile libraries in rural Sri Lanka to box libraries in refugee camps in Pakistan, Books for Asia finds innovative ways to get quality reading material to children who need them the most, including those in the region's most remote and conflict-ridden areas. With 56 years of grassroots experience, Books for Asia has witnessed, again and again, the extraordinary ripple effect of providing students, teachers, and librarians with colorful, engaging children's books. The nonprofit delivers nearly one million books a year to thousands of schools and libraries serving an estimated 5 million people.
We Give Books aims to donate 10,000 books to Books for Asia to inspire, shape, and hone young people's imaginations, critical thinking skills, and their understanding of the world and their place in it. With your help, young people will have new books to read and develop to their full potential--a powerful tool with the potential to combat poverty and disease, and to promote stability.

Book Donation Project

A. Mohammed Musthafa's book donation project aims to donate books to libraries in Corporation schools. He talks to Elizabeth Paulose about his initiative
Book Park is a small, rectangular book shop on Avanashi road where a large banner announces, “Reading is a gift. So gift your friends a book.”
The owner of this bookshop is A. Mohammed Musthafa. His journey with books began when he was 12 years old. After school everyday, he would work at a second-hand bookstall in Easwaran Koil street. “This is where I started to spend my time with books and inculcated the habit of reading,” he says. Mohammed's school did not have a library.
Early inspiration
Once he completed his board exams, he started working full time at a second hand book shop in Ukkadam Book market. In 2002, he started a book stall with a friend. It was merely a stall on the pavement with 1000 second-hand books in Easwaran Koil street. Unfortunately in 2005, due to rains he had to think of an alternative location. He set up shop once more outside Hotel Arunachalam in Peelamedu. That stayed open for around two years. Now, 29-year-old Mohammed runs his Book Park. This has been open for over a year now. It is mainly second-hand books that find a place in his store, and you find everything from Chetan Bhagat's new bestseller ‘Revolution 2020' to Roald Dahl's short story collections there. He also runs a lending library by the same name at Varadharaja Mill bus stop that has over 50,000 books.
On April 23 this year, Mohammed organised a mobile book awareness campaign in honour of World Book Day. A van went around the city for three days distributing pamphlets about the importance of reading.
But what makes Mohammed's store really unique is a large glass box placed at its entrance. It has books inside it. These are donations from customers and even passersby. There are more than a thousand books in it. “Whenever I saw drop boxes placed near cash counters for N.G.O's such as CRY and others I wondered why the same could not be implemented for books. After all, books symbolise knowledge,” says the young man who then started the book donation project.
Drop a book
Mohammed placed this box outside his shop on February 15 this year. He accepts books that are suitable for children studying in classes one to 12. He does not take books on religion. Says B. Prem Kumar, a lecturer at P.S.G College of Pharmacy who came along with his kids and donated over 10 books, “This is a great initiative. I find that kids these days do not read much with so many distractions. I hope, this way people read more.” Mohammed hopes to donate the books he has collected to Corporation School libraries. He has visited a few of those libraries and has spoken to the authorities. “I find that though there are books in these libraries, kids still do not read,” he points out.
Spread the good word
“You can donate anything from story books, general knowledge books to comics”, he says. People can even donate newspapers. The money received from selling the newspapers will be used to purchase books. Also, donors can avail a discount of 25 per cent on the books in the shop. Once books are donated, Mohammed gives a receipt to the donor with a list of all the books. While one copy of the receipt will remain with him, one is given to the school.
For children's day
He plans to donate these books between November 14 and November 20 which is celebrated as the National Book Week. Book Park is located near Caramel Bakes, Opposite Central Bank of India, Peelamedu, Avanashi Road. For more details, call 9894033101/ 9894033102.

Blood Donation

Friends2support vision is a NGO which paves way by bringing blood donors and those in need to a common platform.
Facts about blood needs

1.Every year our nation requires about 4 Crore units of blood, out of which only a meager 40 Lakh units of blood are available.
2.The gift of blood is the gift of life. There is no substitute for human blood.
3.Every two seconds someone needs blood.
4.More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day.
5.A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year.
6.The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints.
7.The blood type most often requested by hospitals is Type O.
8.Sickle cell patients can require frequent blood transfusions throughout their lives.
9.More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.
10.A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 units of blood

Facts about the blood supply

* Blood cannot be manufactured – it can only come from generous donors.
* Type O-negative blood (red cells) can be transfused to patients of all blood types. It is always in great demand and often in short supply.
* Type AB-positive plasma can be transfused to patients of all other blood types. AB plasma is also usually in short supply.

Facts about the blood donation process
1.Donating blood is a safe process. A sterile needle is used only once for each donor and then discarded.
2.Blood donation is a simple four-step process: registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation and refreshments.
3.Every blood donor is given a mini-physical, checking the donor's temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin to ensure it is safe for the donor to give blood.
4.The actual blood donation typically takes less than 10-12 minutes. The entire process, from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about an hour and 15 min.
5.The average adult has about 10 units of blood in his body. Roughly 1 unit is given during a donation.
6.A healthy donor may donate red blood cells every 56 days, or double red cells every 112 days.
7.A healthy donor may donate platelets as few as 7 days apart, but a maximum of 24 times a year.
8.All donated blood is tested for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis and other infectious diseases before it can be transfused to patients.
9.Facts about blood and its components
10.Blood makes up about 7 percent of your body's weight.
11.There are four types of transfusable products that can be derived from blood: red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate. Typically, two or three of these are produced from a unit of donated whole blood – hence each donation can help save up to three lives.
12.Donors can give either whole blood or specific blood components only. The process of donating specific blood components – red cells, plasma or platelets – is called apheresis.
13.One transfusion dose of platelets can be obtained through one apheresis donation of platelets or by combining the platelets derived from five whole blood donations.
14.Donated platelets must be used within five days of collection.
15.Healthy bone marrow makes a constant supply of red cells, plasma and platelets. The body will replenish the elements given during a blood donation – some in a matter of hours and others in a matter of weeks.

There are four main blood types: A, B, AB and O.

In 1901, Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian physician, discovers the first three human blood groups. On his birthday i.e June 14th "World Blood Donors Day" celebrates. On October 1st ‘National Blood Donation Day’ celebrates in India.

Recycling old tyres for a green cause

A tree guard made from worn-out bicycle tyres provides protection to saplings on the Velachery by-pass road.
B. Jaya Pandian, owner of a bicycle shop in Velachery, found a useful way to recycle worn out tyres. He has made tree guards using the tyres to protect saplings.
"As a cycle shop owner, I realised that the tyres could be put to better use once they were rejected. So, with the help of a few of my friends, I designed a tree guard using them," he said. He realised that the tyre tree guard provides better protection to saplings than the guards made of iron that were usually put up.
Mr. Pandian says that the tyre tree guard dissuades even people from touching the saplings. In many places even saplings provided with an iron tree guard get stolen and are exposed to vandalism. The tyre guards also allow adequate sunlight and shade. Mr. Pandian and his group of friends have set up the guards around 100 saplings, all of which are doing well. He has planted most of the saplings in Velachery, Saidapet and Peravallur, he says.
A tree guard is made using 18 old tyres tied to three casuarina polls. Mr. Pandian says that he had no problem collecting the used and old tyres. All he had to do was spend Rs.90 on buying the casuarinas poles. He said he collected most of the tyres from bicycle shops owned by his friends. Tree lovers and environmentalists can think of similar recycling ideas, which will help put non bio-degradable materials such as tyres to better use.

Save the Olive Ridley Turtles - SSTCN

OLIVE RIDLEY TURTLES

An NGO CALLED The Students Sea Turtle Conservation Network [SSTCN] is a voluntary group, mainly comprising students who have been working in the beaches of Chennai since 1987, trying to conserve and create awareness about the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtle . The Olive Ridley turtles nest on the beaches at night, between December and April every year. When the turtle hatchlings emerge 45 days later, they release them safely into the sea. On Friday nights and Saturday nights they conduct a walk for interested people.

We walk seven kilometres from Neelangarai to Besant Nagar beach. We gather at Neelangarai beach at around 11pm. There is a discussion about turtles and other environmental issues and the walk starts after that. The walk may go on till 4am or 5am depending on whether we find any nests, and how many we find.
To get to Neelangarai beach you have to take the turning off ECR next to Shanthi hospital. There is an arch over the road that says Kapaleeswarar Nagar. You will need to leave your vehicles [if any] at the Elliots beach end to return home after the walk.

In order to join them on the turtle walks, you can contact any of the following people:-

VHS also offers specific options for donations:

1.Rs. 35,000 will pay for a single room with a bed. The donor's name will be on a plaque outside the room.

2.Treatment for all poor in-patients for one day in a year. The interest from a one-time endowment of Rs. 1.5 lakh can be used for this, while Rs. 9000 will take care of the drugs and disposables used in treating them (about 70 on an average, at Rs. 125 per patient) on any specific day.

3.Maintaining an in-patient costs the hospital Rs. 420 a day (medicines, nursing, food, overheads, etc.).
70 patients cost around Rs. 30,000. The one-time endowment for this will be Rs. 5 lakh.

4.Feeding the poor patients on a day in the year specified by you, paid for with the interest from a corpus fund for that purpose. A donation of Rs. 5000 (which will be added to the corpus) will entitle the donor to choose the specific day he/she wishes to feed the poor patients.
Most people use this method to remember death anniversaries. A special feeding for all the patients on a particular day will be Rs. 2500.
The donor's name, and the name of the person in whose honour these donations have been made, will go up on the notice board on that day.

You can also give money for equipment any other specific purpose.
